The watch has been sitting in a drawer for decades. As you can see from the one photo, it is a Double Hunter which means that there is a cover for the watch on both sides (including a third cover that protects the movement on the back even when you open the outer cover); to open the front cover, you press down on the winding stem. I took the watch to a watch repair person who cleaned, lubricated, and calibrated it--please see the photo of the timing report.
It is 14K solid yellow gold with a 17 Jewel Elgin movement, made for Shreve and Co. I looked up the movement serial number (7938473) on the Elgin web site. According to the site, this movement was produced between 1893 and 1898. It also says the production year was 1899.
I don't understand this disparity unless it means that 1899 was the production date for this particular serial number. Here are some particulars for the watch. Watch weight (with mechanism): 48.5 grams (jeweler measurement). Watch weight (without mechanism): 21.2 grams (jeweler measurement).Chain weight: approximately 10 grams (my crude measurement). The only blemish on the watch that I can see is a tiny dent on the back side that is visible only from an angle. Otherwise, from my perspective as a novice, it is in great condition.
