An 18K SOLID GOLD pocket watch, made by BAUTTE & CIE, GENEVE in about 1840-50, with a case of 1 1/2 inches round and 47.1 grams including its original chain and key. This fine maker is found in museums around the world. The movement is full jewels & is key-wind & set on the back.We cannot see any gold hallmark, which was common for early Swiss watches because there were no stringent precious metal hallmarks requirements as for ex. The case has been tested positively for 18K throughout the entire case.
18K is also the Swiss gold alloy standard. The watch has a certain ellegance because of its flatness & the dial's large appearance & the fine hands. The BAUTTE name stands for some very fine watches & the name goes back to Jean-Francois Bautte, who as an orphan, begun to make watches in 1791. He was very talented as a watchmaker & businessman & was also credited with creating the first genuine ultra-thin watches. Over the next decades, the company operated under a variety of BAUTTE related names. Jean-Francois Bautte did not have a successor or heir to take over his company and a merger was arranged with the also well know GIRARD-PERREGAUX Watch. For this reason, Girard-Perregaux now dates back its history to the year of 1791. Condition: The watch runs and is in terrific cosmetic condition. It lacks a crystal but the bezel is in place.
