M Wendt Antique 1886 Sterling Silver Double Hunter Pocket Watch & Fob Chain. Joachim Mathias Wendt was born in Holstein then a Danish province in 1830. After his mother's death around 1839 he was brought up by his father and two sisters. He then apprenticed as a watchmaker and silversmith. When In 1848 Holstein was conquered by Prussia he emigrated to South Australia, arriving in 1851.

He began business as watchmaker and jeweller in Pirie Street, and in 1852 opened premises at 68 Rundle Street, moving to larger premises at 84 Rundle Street in 1861. His business expanded steadily until it became one of the largest and best known in Australia. In 1869 he opened another shop at Mount Gambier and in 1888 another in Broken Hill in New South Wales. Engine turned finish to front of case with empty Cartouche. Key Wound - with original key.

White porcelain hand painted dial with seconds sub dial. 18K Gold Hour & Minute hands. 37 cm Fob Chain- Weight 28g.

Comes with original velvet pouch. This lovely antique and rare Australian pocket watch is in excellent condition as can be seen in the images. Heavy at 152 grams the London 1886 Hallmarked case is spotless with virtually no signs of wear & blank cartouche.

The hand painted dial, signed J. M Wendt Adelaide & Mt Gambier is also in great condition with only a faint crack as can also be seen in the images. Running well and keeping great time which is amasing considering the age.

Unfortunately the glass is missing but this can be easily replaced either with Crystal or a synthetic. Comes complete with a Sterling fob of the same period, hallmarked England but dates cannot be read due to wear. See images as they form part of the complete item description.
