FINE ANTIQUE MATCHING COIN SILVER POCKET WATCH AND ABALONE WATCH CHAIN c. FINE ANTIQUE AMERICAN HAMPDEN WATCH CO. WITH MATCHING COIN SILVER &. This is a Fine Gentleman's Antique 1880's matching set; an early Coin Silver lever set pocket watch by the Hampden Watch Company of Springfield, Mass. With an original period fancy Coin Silver watch chain with Abalone inlays. The Hampden Watch Company, known for its high quality watches, was in Springfield, Mass. From 1877 to 1886; and this watch serial # 366527 was made in 1885.
It is their largest size (18), with an early lever to set the time. The large sized watch case is about 2 1/4" in diameter and about 3/4" thick. The beveled crystal extends 1/8 above the edge of the watch face. The case is solid coin silver, as is the abalone watch chain; and the set is quite heavy for it's size; weighing a hefty 8.2 ounces or 235 grams. The inside of the Coin Silver case is marked FAHYS COIN No. The case has screw off cover plates for both the front and back that are finely threaded. The front cover screws off to extend the small inside lever on the rim at 5 O'clock, used to set the watch time; and the back cover unscrews to adjust the +/- timing feature. Both cover plates fit tightly and align perfectly. The case has no dings or dents with light wear overall; and as expected, light pocket wear to the back side train motif. Overall in fine condition; testament to it's being well cared for, never dropped, and stored properly when it was retired.
The original crystal is clear with one tiny edge nick and a couple of minuscule scratches; all are invisible to the naked eye, but can be seen under magnification. The face of the watch is white enamel in fine condition with black delicate black watch hands. Early high quality watches like this one in a silver case typically had 15 jewels.
Hampden had an 18 size Railway grade 15-jewel pocket watch movement that was one its highest grades; and later introduced a stem wind open face watch that was listed as grade 60. The case is open faced, as are all Railroad watches; and the back of the silver case has an overlaid hand engraved gold image of a period coal burning locomotive and tender car. The movement is original to the case. Thus, it is a foregone conclusion this is a minimum of 15 jewels.
Hampden also made the 18 size in 17 and 21 jewels; but he only way to tell is to take the watch apart. I turned the stem about 1-2 rotations to start the watch; and unless you are going to wear the watch, there is no need to wind it further or over wind the spring. The hand made unmarked Coin Silver watch chain is about 12 3/4" overall, and has 12 total Abalone inlaid panels 6 double sided links, each about 1 1/4" long x 1/4 wide. I found a few very thin hairline cracks that are almost invisible to the naked eye, but can be seen with magnification.
The panels are solid and these tiny hairline cracks and are not distracting. Abalone also has naturally occurring layering that is inherent in the way it is formed. Overall, this Handsome 1880's matching Gentleman's Coin Silver Watch & Coin Silver Abalone watch chain set is in fine condition; and would be perfect for any watch, pocket watch, watch chain, fine jewelry collection, conversation piece, display, desk accessory, paperweight, Old West, Gambler's, Sportsman, Railroad collector display; or as a gift / presentation.
