The movement, ticking away very slowly, keeps reasonable time, and has just been properly cleaned and overhauled by our watch-maker. Enamel white dial has fine black Roman numerals, with a minor imperfection at edge above VII and on edge between VIII and IX (8 and 9, though much closer to 9 - see last 2 photos), and a few tiny dots of discoloration, commensurate with age and fine care (see photos). Blue steel hands sit upon the dial of 48.5 mm diameter, covered with dome glass. Movement is extraordinarily fine condition, measuring 42.5mm diameter, featuring superb gilding, a full plate and key set, silver regulator, and blued steel screws.
The movement with silvered regulator, brass escape wheel and finely cut out balance cock, and clearly signed Monnier & Mussard No. 8295, has a slow grand-father type clock tick reminiscent of the work of Yates. The watch is key-wind and comes with a key, winding through the front, with hand-set through the front. The key-wound watch runs the full length of the Fusee chain and comes with a winding key, with the movement wound clock-wise through the front and the hands set in the front when the front bezel is open.
The movement overhaul is in superb order showing very little wear, excellent gilding to the plate, and is in superior working order for its age. Case is in superior condition, with the solid 9k gold outer case measuring 56 mm outside diameter. The hinges are excellent with the case closing tightly, and the bow is original to the case. The inner case measures 48.5 mm, matching that of the movement.
We find the top bow, outer case clip, and button in fine condition as well. This watch has clearly been highly valued and well looked after during its two-and-a-half century history, as we find it not having been buffed up or over-polished, as seems to be the case so often with early watches of high value. This is a very fine period pocket watch in simply stunning condition, the price reflecting its rarity as a collectible, or as an investment for the future, as slow beat watches in this condition can only rise in value, given the limited supply, and we are pleased to offer it to market for your pleasure.
